Council for Agricultural Research and Economics
Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA) is the leading Italian research organization dedicated to agri-food supply chains with a legal entity under public law, supervised by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food, Forestry and Tourism Policies (Mipaaft). The expert scientific coverage of CREA goes from the agricultural, livestock, fish, forest, agro-industrial and nutritional sectors to the socio-economical field. CREA has full scientific, statutory, organizational, administrative and financial autonomy.
In 2015 a functional reorganization of the previous Agency (Council for Agricultural Research – CRA) was applied, creating 12 research centers (6 related to the agricultural supply chain and 6 transversal), with capillary networks present throughout the country, with a staff of over 2000 units, half of which are researchers and technologists.
The Research Centre for Olive, Citrus and Tree Fruit (CREA-OFA) is one of the 12 Centres and includes five research locations (Roma, Forlì, Caserta, Rende, Acireale). It is concerned with the conservation and enhancement of genetic resources, genetics, genomics and genetic improvement of varieties and rootstocks, in addition to evaluation of varietal innovations. Moreover, the Research Centre applies integrated pest management and control methods to improve the quality and preservation of fruits, the quality of crop production before and post-harvesting, cultural and physiological aspects of nutrition and irrigation, different applications of organic fertilizers and soil improvers, quality and biological properties of fresh fruits, processed products and agri-food by-products, promoting the development of new technologies for the food industry.
